One of the least known, and most thrilling attractions is a visit to the platypuses near Grassy. “Puddle With The Platypus” tours, run by local wildlife guide, Ondrea Richards is the only way to get to see these shy, and incredible mammals. It’s a steep descent (and hence, a steep climb out) to the area where Ondrea has a 100% hit rate in finding these normally-elusive river dwellers, but any visitor with a reasonable level of mobility, will find it well worth the effort.
On our recent trip to KI, my wife and I went on an early-morning expedition with Ondrea and two other couples, and were lucky enough to spot five platypuses. This was truly exhilarating, and one of the singular highlight of our vacation.
Ondrea is a knowledgeable and personable guide, who has an in-depth understanding of the lives of the platypus. While, we were on the riverbank, observing the animals’ swimming and diving and demolishing Ondrea’s delicious breakfast treats, she was counting the creatures for the Australian Platypus Conservancy. We were also asked if we would like to help with this and, of course, agreed.
This was a wonderful experience, and we both felt privileged to have been given the opportunity to be there.

Hi again Ondrea – here we are back in NZ after a wonderful holiday on your island. I just had to let you know that the platypus tour was quite the highlight of the whole trip. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine we would have so many sightings! Thank you so much for giving us such a lovely morning and very best wishes for the future.
